It is a usually unknown fact that the LCD technology came form the year 1888 when Austrian scientist Friedrich Reinitzer discovered the properties of liquid crystallization. In computation, the LCD TV concept is more or less eighty years of age. So when this concept was introduced, engineers used it in marketing their products. The first hard work was recognized to be from George Heilmeier who is an Electrical Engineer from the University of Pennsylvania. He utilized liquid crystallization process in his commercial products. He has a Ph.D, M.S.E., and M.A's Solid State Electronics from the Princeton University. While working with colleagues Nunzio Luce, Louis Zanoni, Lucian Barton, Joel Goldmacher, Joseph Catellano, and Richard Williams, he developed the LCD technology one at a time.

Before the LCD system came together as a whole new technology, its parts were conceived separately. Liquid crystal display or LCD was a by-product of the experimentation with liquid crystals. While the mentioned brains of this technology were experimenting, they found out that it is possible to create clock, digital watches, and calculators through what later came to be known as LCD technology. The digital clock that is famous today is from Heilmeier's hard work with RCA.

The LCD technology was passed to and further developed by James Ferguson. He is a University of Missouri graduate and became the director of the Kent State University's Liquid Crystal Institute. He was able to discover the nematic field effect which led to the prototype for LCD TV displays in the present time.

In 1971, Ferguson's team was able to unveil the first LCD but unfortunately it seemed to be a disappointment because of the "phantom images" that were displayed during its action broadcasts. They have made necessary arrangements and improvements thus the creation of the modern day LCD. Picture transmission was improved and so picture quality became better. Because of this extreme hard work, Ferguson was able to make 100 patents and build his own corporation.

LCD truly came from an amazing mental power and hard work. Right now, LCDs are most likely to replace the traditional cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and improve the home viewing experience of every user. Pioneer BDP-95FD Blu-Ray Disc Reviews For the Multi-Region Version

This player is amazing. It's clearly better than the first gen players, bdps1, even the bd91. there are a few little things to consider about blu ray. It SHOULDN'T play cds. if you have 1000 to spend on an Elite blu ray, then you should have good money, like 600 for a Cambridge azure or a like 24 bit cd player. blu ray lasers are very narrow, and will not read cds correctly, and to make them do so would be way more work than is considered worthwhile by the major manufacturers.

That being said, DROOL! best upscaling I have seen on any player to date, full streaming features, and the Pioneer Elite look. It's a really good player and I for one think that it's the best to date.

It plays CDs, as well as internally decodes advanced audio (minus DTS-HD Master) into PCM for transmission over HDMI or analog, for all the legacy receivers out there.

Very nice Blu Ray player though with many nice features. Loads like a computer not as fast as a regular player but no big deal. This model is much better than the last from this line. Picture and sound is so wonderful on a Pioneer Plasma TV.I also have the Elite VSX-91TXH amp to go with my system Great Work Pioneer but work on the prices ok.

I am starting to flavor Pioneer the most.

According to the manual for the BDP-94FD, the connector diagram on page 11 shows 8 RCA connectors to support 7.1.

I doubt there will be any major physical changes between the BDP-94FD and the to-be-released BDP-95FD.

I don't claim any special expertise but my experience with Pioneer Elite has been my barometer. I bought a second DVD a couple of years back to support both DVD and SACD which my Denon did not. The Pioneer bested the Denon in both Picture Quality and musicality in my setup AND the Pioneer is still working, the Denon's motor went about 6 months ago. Sounds real simple to me...........

I just picked up a Pioneer Elite BDP-95HD from the Pioneer Store in Costa Mesa.

I will keep this first post for answers to common questions so that new owners get answers quickly.

Does the Pioneer Elite BDP-95HD generate the DTS-HD Master Audio Bitstream that can be decoded by the receiver / processor?

-- Yes. My Integra DTC-9.8 displays 'DTS-HD MSTR' when I select DTS-HD Master Audio sound track from disk. Audio is un-frig'in-believable!

Are the load times improved over the 94HD?

-- Using POTC: COTBP as a benchmark, it took 22 seconds from pressing START on the remote to the POTC "loading..." message to appear and a total of 38 seconds for the Disney screen to appear

How does the PQ of the 95FD compare to the 94HD?

-- Very similar - 95FD just slightly sharper

How well does the 1080p24fps work:

-- Flawlessly

How is good is the DVD SD upconversion on the BDP-95FD?

-- Excellent (better than the BDP-94HD and the HD1)

REPORTED ISSUES or PROBLEMS: None.

I have been watching Kingdom of Heaven Blu Ray while listening to the DTS-HD MA sound track (Integra displays DTS-HD MSTR :-) Sounds un-frig'in-believable.

Player seems to be operating flawlessly. Boot up time very acceptable. Responds to remote immediately. It is difficult to tell if there are any PQ differences from the PS3 that I had but the DTS-HD MA is mind blowing...

It just took 35 seconds from pushing the close button on the remote to Kingdom of Heaven to begin playing...

With Disk in DVD player and player on stop, using POTC: COTBP it took 22 seconds for the POTC loading message to appear and a total of 38 seconds for the Disney screen to appear...

After setting it up I can't help feeling déjà vu all over again. As you can see in the pic it does look nearly identical to the 94HD and HD1. I do like the class look it has though. I really like that high gloss piano finish look. As Tony said it takes about 35 seconds for titles to start playing. Which actually is a pretty BIG improvement over the two older models. Just like the others initial set up is a breeze. I do like the Pioneer start up screen better on the 95FD. It just looks cooler. I am not only comparing this unit to its brothers (or cousins) but also to the Samsung 1400. This ELITE unit costs more but you feel like it is money well spent.

Once again I love having the resolution button on the remote. Being able to change it on the fly is so much nicer then having to stop the movie and go into the set up menu (like the 1400 and HD DVD players). If there is one feature other manufacturers could learn from Pioneer that would be a good one to start with. Also, having 1080p/23.98 (24) done without issues is a breath of fresh air. Toshiba has been struggling as many of us know so it is nice to get a unit out of the box (just like the 1400, 94HD and HD1) that can do 1080p/23.98 without any EDID issues. I have not spent a great amount of time with this unit but from what I have I can say it is THE best Blu ray player on the market.

The picture Q is very colorful and very sharp. It bests the very impressive (especially for its price) Samsung 1400. Not by a lot in terms of pic Q but when you add the entire package together you know why the Pioneer is more. Picture settings, menu options, great remote (which is light years ahead of the competition) and of course a great picture with great sound. Speaking of sound I have only done a couple of comparisons so far but it is too easy to select bitstream passing in the menu. No confusion here. You are either sending D.D. or DTS via HDMI or PCM... Your call. That easy. I will do more on audio soon but sending the audio to my receiver (Onkyo 905) sounded great just as I expected. It also sounded good the few minutes I had the 95FD doing it. I am not going to say which is better because I do not want to open that can of worms again. So do not ask here. PM me.

I am using the new Sony VPL- VW60 "Black Pearl" (which is the 3rd pic) for all of my comparison so far. It handles 1080p/23.98 like a champ. I can also send it straight into my crystalio II and then tweak the image before sending it to the VW60 in 1080p/23.98. The Pioneer 95FD gets along with all of my other components which I do not take for granted these days.

And yes I am making reference to the XA2 and A35 which are stubborn when it comes to sending 1080p/24 to some displays. In direct comparison to the 94HD the 95FD is obviously a more flexible unit with a little quicker load times. Being able to pass HBR audio directly to the receiver for decoding is a really cool feature. Especially if you purchased one of the newer ones that can decode it. The picture Q is very close. I keep going back and forth. Going straight to my pj it does look like the 95FD is just a little more sharper but their brilliant colors are nearly identical. I will say the home media gallery looks more refined on the 95FD. I have never really got into that feature before but now I am intrigued so I may just jump in!

Bottom line is if you have the 94HD and do not care about the bitstream audio feature then there is absolutely no reason to dump it for the 95FD. However, if you do not and are interested in getting the best Blu ray unit in terms of features and pic/sound Q then look no further than the 95FD! I hate to keep picking the new Pioneer units as my favorite Blu ray unit but honestly the other companies are still two steps behind. The 95FD is the starter in my set up. More to come (SD DVD versus the A35 and XA2 and even 1400) as well as a few more thoughts on audio...BTW, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (BR) is looking and sounding awesome on this unit! Pick up a copy!

Well, I am pleasantly surprised to post that the 95FD has excellent upconversion. Much better than the 94HD and HD1. I even put it through the HQV Blu ray benchmark tests and it handled them very good. Especially my favorite stadium torture test! And as tradition lately it even made my adult videos look great! It is right on par with the A35 and XA2. I will work harder tomorrow and do real side by side comparisons (1400 included) but my first initial impressions are very good to excellent... More to come..

Have you compared a 5.1 PCM track coming out of the PS3 vs. 95? I know there should not be a noticeable difference, but if you would not mind doing a comparison I would be curious to know for sure.

It is not surprising that DTS-MA sounds better from the 95 as we are getting the full signal vs. only the 1.5 core of the PS3. Can't wait to hear this!
The DTS-HD hi res is from the King Of New York's DTS HD soundtrack (I am reviewing) and the DTS-HD MASTER is from the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer soundtrack which states it is DTS-HD MASTER...

As I posted earlier in this thread the 1400 is very close but the 95FD produces a sharper image. I also prefer it for SD DVD upconversion. I also prefer all the other cool features like the resolution button on the remote. It is much nicer being able to change resolutions on the fly then having to hit stop and go into a set up menu. Especially when you are trying to compare them! I have spent awhile this afternoon playing different blu ray discs but tomorrow I will do my comparisons between the XA2 for SD DVD upconversion. I predict the 95FD will be on par with the XA2. We need to find out which chip it is using because it is by far much better than the 94HD and HD1... More to come tomorrow...

If the 95 can match the XA2 on SD upscaling this is a tremendous plus. The XA2 makes new DVDs almost look like HD and the only players so far that can do the same job are the very Hi-end Denon's or players costing 5 times more. The Samsung 1200 has the same Reon chip and should also be great but lacks the new audio features. Depending on your tests I will be a new 95 owner soon.

I have the bdp-95fd and the pdp-6010fd display. Extremely happy with it. Firmware support has been excellent. I am using it with a TacT 2.2x digital preamp, TacT digital Boz amp, Escalante Pinyons and a pair of Escalante subs. My connection is through the coax digital output. I have had an signature upgraded Denon 3930 in my system using the same set-up and I must say the sound quality and bass impact blows me away on the bpd-95fd In stock form, the Pioneer bpd-95fd is an excellent performer in terms of audio and video.

Given my system can only process two channel audio through the digital output, am I getting the two channel version decoded Dolby Digital Plus?

The idea of a group of kids from the fifties drawing pictures of what they think the future will be like and burying them in a time capsule to be unearthed fifty years later is a good twist, particularly as one of the children hears voices which tell her the dates and locations of every major disaster to occur on the planet for the next fifty years, which she transcribes on to her drawing paper. Nicolas Cage plays single father John Koestler whose son Caleb (Chandler Canterbury) is the recipient of the mysterious page of numbers.

Soon enough, strange looking people appear in the shadows, and after closer examination, John finds the numbers have meaning. He sets about trying to stop the disasters from occurring, but eventually he realises, there is nothing he can do about the ultimate disaster set to occur when the numbers run out. Director Alex Proyas has been known for combining high concept science-fiction motifs, Hollywood-style execution with an arthouse twist and "Knowing" is no exception. He manages to combine a few big disaster sequences (which look spectacular), some fine acting from the cast (in particularly Nicolas Cage), and then also offer a climax that you are not likely to expect from a Hollywood movie. The film has some good moments of terror, action, character and thrills.

THE BAD: Overkill would be a good way to describe how this film was directed. The central concept is sound, but given the heavy-handedness of the storytelling, it comes across as a little ridiculous. All the characters seem like they are suffering through everything right from the beginning which makes it difficult to watch. The disaster sequences are a little brutal, particularly the airline crash where John watches people on fire jumping out of the burnt remains of the plane, or being visibly caught in subsequent explosions and fireballs. The subway train sequence is the same, with the physical impact of the train wiping out people making the scene hard to sit through. The film is full of plot holes and conveniences; how Nicolas Cage ended up in the exact spot of the first disaster and in turn finding the final piece of the puzzle in decoding the sheet of numbers is one of the most amazing coincidences ever put to film, but the film tries to gets its way around this by playing to the themes of destiny versus random chance, however far-fetched it becomes.

The musical score by Marco Beltrami is likewise way over the top. Whenever the "whisper people" show up, the high pitched thriller tones are overbearing to the point where you want to cover your ears. The "whisper people" are also another point of contention; their first appearances are quite creepy, but as the film continues on, an uneven handling of their place in the film makes them lose their effectiveness as the other-worldly focus of the film. Proyas at first seems to suggest that they are aliens who are out to get us, but then when the film shifts tone in the climax to a more religious motif with the idea of settling a new Adam and Eve on another planet to start again, he seems to suggest they are more God-like, particularly in the last shot of them flying away in to space with Caleb and his new friend running through the fields towards the tree of knowledge. "Knowing" seems to sit half way between a great Hollywood disaster movie and a great independent arthouse film but without capturing the elements from either that would make the film great. "Knowing" is an interesting exercise nonetheless, but ultimately disappointing in its execution.

LGE are a manufacturer known for exceptional quality electronics at a price that's righT. Their most recent foray has seen them enter the flat screen LCD television market with some surprising early results. Their new range of LED TVs, the SL9000 series, have been wowing consumers; the combination full HD capabilities and hassle free functionality and a long life have been drawing in converts. But how good are these new LED televisions?

LG have produced, what would appear to be, stunning TV's at competitive prices.Their new range includes the LG 47SL9000, one of the smaller screens, although the specifications are pretty much the same across the board.

LG's SL9000 range of HDTV's have a series of LED's located on the edge of the display as opposed to the traditional LCD format seen on many models currently available. Light Emitting Diode has become the new byword in an industry that strives to produce ever greater levels of detail and viewing quality. There's no denying that the 47SL9000 and it's larger, 47 " brother produce exceptional viewing (the 3,000,000:1 contrast ratio alone produces a truly stunning selection, and depth, breathing new life into HD viewing).

The only downside to the screens on the 47SL9000 - the 1080p HD display has been coated with a glossy layer that has a habit of reflecting a lot of light off the surface so you need to plan to put this TV in a room where it won't be in direct sunlight. LG has coined the term 'borderless' to describe the SL9000 series but, although it's slim compared to many of their previous models, it's not the thinnest TV available to buyers (3.5 cm at the edges and over 4 cm at the bottom).

When first turned on, the LG 47SL9000 loads up the default factory settings as default which are, if we're brutally honest, not designed for optimal viewing. One of the best recommendations we can make is to read your instruction manual and configure the TV to your own requirements rather than using the LG's defaults. One of the best modes on the LG 47SL9000 is the Cinema Mode which has been designed to provide an all-round quality viewing experience out of the box. We found that this setting needs minor adjustments to get a great picture (some minor tweaks to you backlighting settings will do the trick).

Unfortunately, LG has decided to build the 47SL9000 TV with Trumotion 100Mhz motion control - the motion control features found on the SL8000 series is a far superior200 Hz - but the set still handles fast moving action well.

The build and design quality are up there with the best names in LCD manufacturing and the 47SL9000 features pretty much all the connectors you'll need to turn it into a decent multimedia hub. Connecting the TV to your compatible games consoles or Blu-Ray device simple and the TV has support for older devices like VCR's and SD devices.

Sadly, there's no SD card reader because LG have decided this television only needs a USB port. No big deal as the USB socket lets you attach a good range of multimedia devices (AVC HD, SD and HD DivX). If that's not enough, the SL9000 models also benefit from LG's support for DNLA compatible devices which let you to connect to streaming content via the Ethernet port.

The SL9000's remote commander is both simple to use and benefit from a backlit panel that makes it easy to see what you're doing when used in a dark room.

The LG 47SL9000's audio capabilities could do with a boost. It's not that LG have scrimped on features; far from it. The culprit here is the super model-like body which, because it's being only 2.9 cm thick, leaves no space for decent speakers! The resulting audio is under par in depth of sound but this is unlikely to be a problem for TV enthusiasts with plans to connect the 47SL9000 up to their surround sound system.

The 47SL9000 LED TV gets a big thumbs up in the power consumption department. The 47SL9000 uses only 0.3 W when placed in standby which, although more than other LED TV's out there, is still a major step up from most of the LCD televisions on the market right now.

Movie Review - The Ugly Truth (2009)

If you want to see a dirty version of When in Rome, watch The Ugly Truth. It is your typical romance set in the world of shock news casting? Maybe I'm really out of it, but come on. How ridiculous is this?

The acting was fine, and the story was okay, too. But, surely for just the shock value, the continual explicit sexual punch lines left this movie trite and quite common place.

This movie could have been a lot better if they would have worked on the plot more - but, even with that said - I did watch the entire movie. So it does have some redeeming value to it, though not much.

Maybe I'm just a little too jaded to enjoy romantic movies anymore. I'm probably the guy, at any rate, who had given up on dating and relationships. Wait a minute, I AM the guy. As much as this movie tries, in a really awkward way, to claim there is that "one" person out there for everyone or that relationships do work, it left me bored about half way through, wanting something different. When in Rome, I thought, had much more plot, even though it was not at all original. The Ugly Truth is, actually, not ugly - its just unoriginal.

I would not recommend this movie, even though it was well filmed and has talented acting in it. It's just way too typical, looking for cheap laughs, simply because the writing isn't able to carry it over. Run. Run.

Asus EEPC

I was looking for a PDA or new smartphone to replace my Nokia N95 but couldn't really decide on anything I liked. They all seemed to offer most of the things I wanted but not all in one bundle. After a bit of searching I happened to come across a website advertising the EEPC for sale. At first I thought it was a kiddies toy but with a bit more searching I came across the EEPC Forum which was full of users praising it. I decided to order myself the 4gb white model and see what all the fuss was about. I chose the 4gb model based on tips I'd found on varying websites mentioning the fact that it has unsoldered RAM and a RAM door in the bottom of the case so you could easily upgrade it. Something which the 2gb model is missing.

When it arrived I was surprised at just how small it is - it's barely bigger than a DVD case and felt solid and well made. The EEPC comes pre-loaded with a linux distro that boots incredibly fast and is pre-loaded with over 40 applications including Pidgin - an IM client that connects to just about anything you can think of including IRC. Openoffice, Skype, Firefox, Tux Paint, virus scanner and other educational entertainment software, E-mail, and Internet radio applications,plus links to Google Docs and Wikipedia.

Driver support seems equally good with the device being able to pick up all the USB devices I've thrown at it such as external webcam (the Asus EEPC has one built in too) Ipod, mobile phones and external USB harddrives.

If you're not happy with having to use Linux they also throw in a CD full of drivers for XP so setting up Windows on your machine is easy. You will need to have access to a USB CDROM drive or USB memory stick to do this though as the EEPC is too small to house it's own CDROM drive.

While lacking a CDROM drive the EEPC sure makes up for it in other areas such as connectivity. With 3 USB ports, Ethernet, Webcam, Microphone, VGA output, Wifi, SSD Card reader and headphone sockets, you'll be sure to have enough options on the move. Sure you might be wishing it also had bluetooth or the missing CDROM drive but for the price you really can't argue.

If you're looking for a small lightweight mobile device or even a new PDA, I highly recommend you take a look at the Asus EEPC too before you make your choice.

Eliminating that Terrible Hum From Your Home Theater Speakers

You've all heard it, that dreaded 60Hz hum through the speakers of a home theater or house audio system. Hopefully you heard it at a friend's house and not your own. It can drive you completely nuts. You may have even tried, unsuccessfully, to fix the little noise problem. That can make you even more crazy. What causes that horrendous noise through your speakers?

More often than not humming through your speakers is caused by a grounding problem. There are three main ground problems that cause problems in an audio / video system. These are ground loops, improper grounding and lack of a ground altogether. The other possible culprits that can cause noise are bad cables, a faulty piece of equipment or electrical noise from a lighting dimmer or electric motor. There are steps you can take to troubleshoot the noise and eliminate it from you theater.

The first step is find out where it is coming from. Disconnect your source and display equipment from your receiver or surround sound processor. If the noise stops, connect them back to the receiver or processor on at a time until the noise returns. When the hum comes back, you found where the noise is entering your system. Note that if you are connecting remote equipment, such as running the signal from your theater room DVD player to the TV in the bedroom, your chances to pick up noise increase dramatically. With such long runs, noise can be induced into the long cable runs from adjacent electrical wiring. It is also easy to create a ground loop, because the equipment is plugged into two different, widely separated outlets, on different electrical circuits.

If the noise is caused by a cable box, the noise is likely caused by the cable TV ground. To test this theory, disconnect the incoming cable TV feed to the rear of the cable box or TV while they are still connected to the rest of the system. If the noise is eliminated by disconnecting the TV cable, the problem is the cable TV ground. You can electrically decouple the cable TV feed from your system with a ground breaking transformer. These are available from many sources. Be advised that many newer, digital cable TV systems require any device in the signal chain to pass a full 1,000 Mhz. Some of the older ground break transformers will not do this. Be sure to check the specifications of whatever device you are purchasing to verify it will pass the digital cable TV signal.

If the noise is from your projector, TV, or monitor, it is most likely caused because the video display device is plugged into a different outlet than the other a/v equipment. It could be on a different circuit as well. These circuits may have two different ground potentials. That is, the resistance to ground is different on each circuit. A difference in resistance to ground from one ground point to another can cause the dreaded ground loop. If you get a ground loop, current flows between the two components. If the current flows through the components internal audio signal ground, you will get a hum.

You can use an isolation transformer, similar to the type used for cable TV ground problems, to eliminate the electrical connection from one component to the other. These transformers are inserted in line with the audio signal connection between the two components. If there is no audio connection between the components, the problem may be current flowing through the video portion. In this case, a video isolation transformer should be used to eliminate the ground loop.

Sometimes power conditioners will stop noise problems by placing equipment on different, electrically isolated outlets. This is done using isolation transformers. Sometimes this is ineffective however, due to the differences in internal construction of different power conditioning equipment. Some safety regulations, such as UL 1950, specify that an isolation transformer is only allowed to isolate the hot and neutral wires; the grounding wire must be passed straight through. If this is the case, the ground loop problem may still exist because many communication circuits are connected to the grounding conductor and not the neutral. In this case, the isolation transformer, or any power conditioner or UPS with an isolation transformer will have absolutely no affect on the grounding problem.

The noise may be generated externally, from a dimmer or refrigerator compressor for example, and coming in through the main power input on the audio video equipment. In this case, a high quality power conditioner may be effective in reducing or eliminating the noise problem. You may also find that one of the signal interconnecting cables in your system is faulty. This can also cause noise problems. Check for this by swapping the cables with one that you know to be good.

You can solve most noise problems in your home theater or multi room audio/video system by taking the systematic, step-by-step approach. Work your way up the signal chain, eliminating each piece of equipment as you go. If you have nothing connected to your speakers except the speaker wiring, and they still hum, the problem is noise induced into the speaker wiring from adjacent power cables. Other than that case, most problems are caused by ground problems, which you can find, and solve, if you take it one step at a time.
