Will 3D Save Blu-Ray?

The field of visual entertainment is one of the largest businesses in the world, with over $8.73 billion DVD sales in American during 2009 alone. There are many reasons why we look into purchasing DVDs such as a love for the film or television series, as a memento of some sort, or simply because we are a fan of a certain actor/actress. The point is, by having a film or series on disc, we are able to relive the feeling and happiness which we felt the first time we viewed this piece of art which is why many continuously purchase these discs every single year. It also allows for many companies to reap the benefits which stem from DVD duplication and printing.

As the level of advances in technology has increased, so have the benefits which come from this digital format of media. We are now able to view entertainment in different settings such as widescreen, can easily pause, rewind and skip sections and can even add subtitles to the film in a wide variety of languages. Surely, there is no way to top this?

Many of us are aware of the new disc format which is solely becoming more ingenious and inventive than the DVD: Blu-ray. Blu-ray discs to those who are something of a novice with technology provide the viewer with much of the same as a DVD, but in a format which you can only experience at theatres. Not only is the image in high definition, providing a richer and sharper image; but as the disc itself is able to hold up to ten times more information that a DVD disc, it is offering us more for our money. 3-D films are something which we typically would associate with the traditional red/green glasses which were required in order to fully experience the 3-D effect. However, recently the 3-D format has evolved, providing viewers with an intense experience which has seen cinema sales soar. When it comes to viewing 3-D films at the cinemas, we often feel that when it comes to viewing this same film on a DVD format, that much of the detail and effect will be lost. However, thanks to the introduction of Blu-ray, 3-D can not only be enjoyed in theatres, but homes too.

Many companies have found that when it comes to DVD duplication of 3-D films in the past that these sales may have floundered due to the lack of quality in the image. Blu-ray has quickly become a forerunner within the disc format for entertainment which has seen the level of DVD duplication for film companies everywhere soar. March 2010 saw the first Blu-ray film release with 'Monsters Vs Aliens' within the UK, but since this time is has now gone on to a European release. As not all films will require a 3-D format such as live action films, for obvious reasons, the level of films which are currently on this format is slim, but this is not necessarily a bad thing. Due to the way in which the discs are manufactured, you are only able to successfully view them as they are intended if you purchase a new Samsung TV model, or a specified Blu-ray player. For those who are current DVD lovers, this may be something which they feel in unnecessary but once you realise the potential in terms of the visual experience of the picture, this is something which you cannot miss.

There are some who may feel that similar to the introduction of the DVD that Blu-ray is a mere novelty. However, it is far from this, being an indication of not only how technology and DVD duplication has evolved, but also a glimpse at what we can hope to enjoy in terms of entertainment in the next decade.
